Aya, originally from Karaganda, began her academic journey with a passion for learning that eventually led her to some of the world's most prestigious universities. Aya attended a specialized high school, which nurtured her interests and laid the foundation for her academic future. Following her high school graduation, she pursued a bachelor's degree at Brown University, majoring in neuroscience with a minor in applied mathematics. Today, Aya is a graduate student at the University of California, Davis, continuing her studies in neuroscience, with a particular focus on computational neuroscience.
Brown's open curriculum wasn't the only factor that influenced Aya's decision. The university's community played a significant role in her choice. From the very beginning, Aya felt a strong connection with the students and staff at Brown, despite only attending online seminars before her arrival. The ease with which she was able to connect with others convinced her that Brown was the right fit.
When asked about the application process, Aya humbly acknowledged that she couldn’t pinpoint exactly why Brown chose her, but she believed it was a combination of her academic interests, extracurricular activities, and the unique perspective she brought to the table. During high school, Aya participated in various chemistry Olympiads, educational projects, and volunteer activities, all of which she highlighted in her application. These experiences not only showcased her academic abilities but also her dedication to learning and community involvement.
One of the challenges Aya faced during her university years was balancing academics with extracurricular activities. She emphasized the importance of finding hobbies and interests outside of school to maintain a healthy work-life balance. For Aya, this meant participating in music, volunteering, and student government. She advised students to find communities that share their interests, as this makes the university experience more enjoyable and fulfilling.
Now at UC Davis, Aya reflects on how her time at Brown University prepared her for graduate school. The academic foundation she built during her undergraduate years has been invaluable, allowing her to thrive in the rigorous environment of graduate studies. Beyond academics, the skills she developed in time management, communication, and collaboration have been crucial to her success.
Aya's journey is a testament to the power of following one's passions and staying true to oneself. Her story is an inspiration to students everywhere, showing that with determination, curiosity, and a supportive community, it’s possible to achieve great things.
